Hello there. Welcome to Entrepreneurial Goddess and the 7th post in my series entitled "Off On My Tangent!

Would you consider yourself "free"? If I said we are all slaves, you'd probably roll your eyes and think that I'm off on my tangent again. Are you familiar with Jesus' famous words: "The truth will set you free"? (John 8:32) Many people say them when they wish to make a point or draw attention to themselves.

Have you ever wondered what Jesus was talking about when he spoke those words? What truth and free from what? Well, read on and you might discover some facts you did not previously know...

Jesus was speaking those words to the Jews and actually gives us the answer in the previous verse at John 8:31, which says: "If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples," and then verse 32 says: "and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Jesus' "word" refers to his teachings found in the Bible and the "truth" is the truth about himself [the Messiah/Son of God], his Father, Jehovah God and God's purpose for the earth via God's Kingdom. But what about the freedom? Well, this is freedom from things like spiritual bondage and lies false beliefs, eg. superstition, fear of the dead and ultimately the fear of dying. How so? Consider these points:

  • Superstition - Many avoid doing certain things unless they consult horoscopes or get advice from a spirit medium.

Bible truth sets us free - The Bible clearly tells us that spirit mediums are something detestable to Jehovah (Deuteronomy 18:11, 12) and are actually machinations of the "father of the lie", Satan the Devil. (Ephesians 6:11; John 8:44)
If you wanted to know the truth about something, would you seek advice from a liar? Of course not!!! You can find the truth in God's Word, the Bible. Afterall, God cannot lie. (Proverbs 2:6; Titus 1:2)

  • Fear of the dead - Many believe the soul lives on after death and these "spirits of the dead" can even do things to harm them, so they think they have to appease their dead loved ones by offering sacrifices or performing certain rituals.

Bible truth sets us free - The Bible tells us that the dead are unconscious, as if in a deep sleep. Moreover, they have ceased to exist completely and therefore cannot harm us or help us. (Psalms 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5)
It's interesting to note that early in human history, Satan wasn't the only one who rebelled against God. There were other wicked angels that joined him in this rebellion too. (Revelation 12:7-9) Known as "demons", Satan and his wicked angels thus try to mislead mankind and one way they do this is to masquerade as the dead, leading humans to believe the dead are alive in some other realm. The Bible also cautions us to avoid these ones. (1 Timothy 4:1)

  • Fear of dying - Death is the enemy and the result of sin. We cannot put it off, neither can we escape it, but we need not fear it. (1 Corinthians 15:26)

Bible truth sets us free - Not only does the Bible tell us the truth about the state of the dead, but thanks to Jesus' ransom sacrifice, we have the resurrection hope. (John 5:28, 29; Acts 24:15)

Jesus himself said: "Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for indeed, the Father is looking for ones like these to worship him." If we want to worship God in the way He approves, we need to know the truth about Him. Our future depends on it. The truth exists NOT in human philosophies and traditions (Colossians 2:8), but in the Bible. So I encourage you to read the Bible, study it and compare what it says in the Bible to what you think you know or what you are being taught by your religious organization. Meditate on Jesus' words, apply Bible counsel in your life and then you will see the truth really does set you free. Today, having carefully studied the Bible, I can honestly say the truth has set me free! How about you?
