Let's recap: Even after two plagues, stubborn Pharaoh has refused to free God's people from slavery in Egypt. The Nile-god Hapi and the frog-goddess Heqt have been disgraced. What's to be done?
Plague #3 (Exodus 8:16-19) - plague of gnats.
Jehovah God has caused dust to turn into gnats, small flying bugs that bite. If you're a camper or like hanging out in the woods, you'll know what I'm talking about! These gnats are on man and beast. The whole land is full of gnats. [I hate bugs!] The magic-practicing priests [aided by wicked demons] have been able to come up with a few tricks of their own thus far. But unlike the first two plagues, they cannot produce gnats from dust by their secret arts and admit defeat saying to Pharaoh: "It is the finger of God!" (Exodus 8:19**)
This third plague disgraced the god Thoth, the lord of magic. [I guess he'd lost his magic touch since he wasn't able to help the magic-practicing priests duplicate the third plague!] Even the earth-god, Geb wasn't left out. He couldn't prevent the "dust of the earth" from turning into pesky gnats either! You'd think this might have had some sort of effect on Pharaoh, but no, he's still not listening to Moses and Aaron! So what happened next? Find out with Plague #4!
